Be Aware Of Sound Limiters
The dreaded sound limiter has ruined many a wedding plan with people finding out there are huge limitations on sound only after they have already booked their wedding venue.
If you want to have live music and a lively party, having a sound limiter will reduce your options regardless of whether a band says they are sound limiter friendly. If you have a limit of 85db or lower, a live band is likely to sound underwhelming and the audience will definitely be louder than any of the instruments which is an unusual experience to say the least.
This doesn't mean you can't have a great night but it's worth knowing about before you book your venue. A duo will be a great option for securing an authentic live music experience for the evening if you're looking at an 85db or lower limit and a good duo will still get everyone on the dance-floor singing along and having the best time.
Most bands will be able to work with a limiter of 95db (depending on how hard their drummer plays) and experienced bands should be able to navigate a 90db limiter but having no limiter at all is your best option and although one venue might look perfect, it won't really be perfect unless the experience is everything you have dreamed of... you really don't want to be walking on eggshells or telling people to calm down when they're dancing and singing later in the evening.
If you're looking at a more relaxed wedding day with a chilled evening vibe then having a sound limiter probably won't affect you too much but it's always worth noting that sound limiters can act differently depending on where they are placed and how big a room is. If a room is huge, sounds will resonate and reverberate more and appear louder, possibly triggering the limiter earlier. If a room is too small, big instruments (rock size drums) will be likely to trigger a limiter earlier due to how much sound and the frequencies they output.
Granted, this is all pretty technical and you probably don't want to be learning the science in order to plan your day - a good musician/band will be able to speak to your venue and make arrangements as necessary or even advise you on whether a venue will be suitable for your expectations.
In reality, it might be better to book the musicians you want before the venue itself if the live music is an important factor for your day!
